Thank you, Mr. Burton

On occasion, a school teacher will ask us to speak to their class about journalism and afterwards we always receive thank you notes from the kids. I spoke to a fourth grade class and a week or so later this note was at the top of the pile. This perceptive young lady put into words what every journalist has thought at one time or another. I’m not sure what I said to influence this student, but it is the best thank you note I’ve ever had:

Dear Mr. Burton, Thank you so much! For coming in taking your time off to tell us about your job and the Orlando Sentinel. I learned a lot from it. Before you came I was thinking about becoming a newsreporter, but now forget it!! I’ve decided to become a lawyer. Anyway thanks for coming! It was real exciting.
